To investigate the effect of dietary eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) on plasma lipoprotein levels, lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity and liver acetyl CoA carboxylase activity, highly concentrated EPA (78%) purified from sardine oil was fed to stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) for 30 days. Significantly (P < 0.05) lower systolic blood pressure and plasma total cholesterol were observed in rats fed an EPA diet. In addition, higher HDL cholesterol and lower VLDL cholesterol levels were found in rats fed the EPA diet as compared with rats fed the control diet. However, no significant change of plasma LDL cholesterol was observed in rats between the two dietary groups. EPA supplementation increased the activity of plasma LCAT in rats. In addition, rats fed an EPA diet had lower liver total lipids and adipose tissue weights. However, higher liver acetyl CoA carboxylase activity was observed in rats fed the EPA diet. Results from the present study suggest that dietary EPA might stimulate the plasma lipoprotein metabolism and also alter lipogenesis in the liver of SHRSP rats.

[Comparison of the effect of Lasolvan and betamethasone on lung maturity of fetal rabbits]

8 rabbits received Lasolvan i.v. on day 25, 26 and 27 of pregnancy. 8 rabbits received betamethasone i.m. on 26th and 27th day of pregnancy. The control group received 0.9% NaCl. On day 28 of pregnancy the caesarean section was carried out, the newborn rabbits killed after 45 minutes. In their lungs the lecithin contents was significantly higher in the Lasolvan group than in the betamethasone group and control group, but in the betamethasone group not significantly higher than in the control group. Betamethasone caused in the fetuses the lowering of the body weight, of the wet weight of lungs, of the dry weight lungs and the increase of the pulmonary fluid contents. Lasolvan had no such undiserable effect.

Studies on amniotic prolactin: chromatographic pattern and correlation with the lecithin content.

We have measured the concentrations of prolactin and lecithin in the amniotic fluid from 20 normal pregnant women in the 2nd and 3rd trimester. Prolactin is present totally as a low-molecular-weight form, 'little' prolactin, and appears to correlate negatively with lecithin during the 2nd and positively during the 3rd trimester. On the basis of these results and of the information that prolactin is present as high-molecular-weight isohormones in maternal blood, it is argued that amniotic prolactin is synthesized 'in situ' and that different mechanisms are involved in the regulation of prolactin production.
