Impression method of the colon using sodium alginate--an experimental evaluation in dog.

Yoshimoto S, Otsuki S, Ohnishi R, Nishimura S, Kawai K.

An experimental study using adult dog was conducted on the impression of the colon whereby a screening test is done by making a mold of the intestine with sodium alginate. The mold of the intestine could be obtained easily and safely in a short time. Protrusions about 2 mm in diameter corresponding to lymphoid tissue of the rectum and sigmoid colon and shallow depressions on the surface of the protrusions were exactly imprinted on the surface of the mild. Compared with the barium study and endoscopy, this method requires neither special equipment nor high-grade technique, can be done easily in a short time and was not inferior in the diagnosis accuracy. Sodium alginate used in this method is a safe substance which is being used clinically as a plasma expander and laxative in addition to being used as an additive to various foods. When injected into the intestine, it exerted no injurious action whatsoever. from these findings, the possibility of this method being used clinically was considered high.

Study of the comparative effectiveness of Dulcolax, Laxadine, Dorbanex, Normacen and Senokot laxatives in the bowel preparation of patients for radiological examinations.

Obisesan AA, Osinaike I.

The effectiveness of five laxatives - Dulcolax, Normacen, Laxadine, Dorbanex and Senokot in the bowel preparation of adult patients for radiological examinations has been compared. The value of using suppositories in addition to the tablets in those preparations that have tablet and suppository forms has also been assessed. The use of Dulcolax tablets plus suppository was most effective. Dulcolax, especially its suppository, was however very expensive and more frequently attended by side effects when compared with the other preparations. Normacen tablet was the second most effective and it is cheap and quite free of side effects. It is therefore given the position of first choice. Laxadine tablet plus its suppository was third best. It is cheap and free of side effects. Dorbanex was fourth best but it is rather expensive. Senokot tablet was the least effective but it is cheap and relatively free from side effects. In those laxatives with tablet and suppository forms, the use of both tablet and suppository is much more effective than the use of the tablet form alone.

Regulation of bowel function by a laxative/stool softener preparation in aged nursing home patients.

Maddi VI.

A 12-week program for 42 chronically constipated patients in a nursing home involved a graduated dosage regimen of standardized senna concentrate with dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (Senokot-S Tablets), a high-fiber diet, and an increased fluid intake. The program achieved a satisfactory pattern of bowel evacuation in 36 (86 percent) of these patients. This pattern, as observed during a 4-week follow-up period while therapy was continued, was characterized by absence of fecal impactions, regular comfortable bowel movements of appropriate consistency, minimal or no straining at stool, and minimal or no resort to enemas. In the initial 2-week control period, none of the 42 patients had responded adequately to only dietary modification and increased hydration. Six additional patients whose response to the control regimen was equivocal, also appeared to benefit from the medication program. Two of these were able to discontinue the laxative tablets completely by the end of the 12-week test period. None of the 48 patients who completed the course experienced any adverse effects related to this rehabilitative program.
