Feeding a laxative like sodium sulphate before parturition is often reported as an effective MMA prophylaxis. In this study pigs were treated with different doses of Na2SO4. Consistency variations of feces were controlled by recording the dry matter contents. To provoke a significant increase in fecal water content 0.6 g Glauber's salt per kg bodyweight is successful in not constipated sows. The increased fluid content of the feces leads by multiplication of colon volume to rising distension stimuli and therefore increased peristaltic. Even with restricted feeding (1 kg per sow and day) accelerated discharge of feces is possible instead of constipation, 15 g sodium sulphate per sow is recorded as an underdose causing increases in fecal dry matter or even obstipation.

Comparative toxicity of Ricinus communis and Jatropha curcas in Brown Hisex chicks.

Symptoms, lesions and changes in growth, haematology and clinical chemistry were investigated in Brown Hisex chicks fed diets containing 0.5% Jatropha curcas seed or 0.5% Ricinus communis seed. High mortality and more severe changes occurred in chicks on Ricinus diet than Jatropha feed. The results indicated that caution should be observed in tropical countries where people are accustomed to chewing castor bean when in need of a laxative.

Polygonum cuspidatum S. (PC) is frequently used as a laxative and an anticancer drug in Chinese medicine. The inhibitory effect of this herb and its component, emodin, on the direct-acting mutagenicity of 1-nitropyrene (1-NP) was examined using the Ames/microsomal test with Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and the genotoxicity of 1-NP was evaluated using the SOS chromotest with E. coli PQ37. Emodin and water extracts of PC markedly decreased the mutagenicity of 1-NP in a dose-dependent manner in both assay systems. Furthermore, emodin and the extracts of PC significantly inhibited the formation of 1-NP DNA adducts in S. typhimurium TA98 in the 32P-postlabeling study. The results suggest that PC extracts and emodin act as blocking and/or suppressing agents to reduce the direct-acting mutagenicity of 1-NP.
