A questionnaire was administered to 71 college students enrolled in dance, drama, and musical theater programs to assess health care problems, injuries, risk-taking behaviors, and sources of care. Many desired help with depression, fatigue, and chronic bone or joint pain, although 37% identified no regular physician. Thirty-nine students reported 87 injuries involving the back, foot, ankle, and knee; 12% sustained injuries at least monthly; and 72% of injuries occurred in class. The incidence of eating disorders appears to be low, as assessed by indirect measures such as body weight, oligomenorrhea, diet pill or laxative use, and scores on a body image index. The 30-day prevalence of tobacco use was 26%; marijuana, 11%; and alcohol, 71%. This survey suggests that performing arts students have important unmet health care needs.

[Bulk-forming agents as laxatives in geriatric patients]

Constipation in elderly long-care patients is an important problem. We compared the daily administration of three bulk-forming agents, semen psyllii (Effersyllium), wheat bran with karaya gum (Crusca di Fior) and bruised linseed, with the routine laxative therapy in our clinic based on lactulose (Duphalac) and a combination of paraffin oil and phenolphthalein (Agarol). To evaluate these two laxative regimens the following parameters were monitored: quantity and quality of the feces and of additional laxatives used for regular defecation; acceptance by the patient; costs per patient and day. The results of this study show that daily administration of a laxative is significantly more efficient than periodic administration, and that daily administration of a bulk-forming agent is, at the same level of effectiveness, less expensive (-35%) than therapy with lactulose alone.

A psychiatric study of idiopathic oedema.
Pelosi AJ, Sykes RA, Lough JR, Muir WJ, Dunnigan MG.
Twenty-five women with idiopathic oedema and twenty-five women attending gynaecology clinics were assessed by means of a standardised psychiatric interview, an interview on dietary habits, and a specially designed interview on current health. The patients with idiopathic oedema were significantly more depressed and anxious, with a trend towards widespread neurotic symptoms. There was no evidence that diuretic or laxative abuse is an important aetiological factor. In many patients with idiopathic oedema excessive fluid retention may be related to the neuroendocrine abnormalities associated with psychiatric illness.
