The healing power of plants: My testimony
"I can't stop loving you."
Most of us living today have at least heard about the health benefits that vegetables
offer. Some are fairly knowledgeable with phytonutrients and their actions in our body.
Indeed, there have been a plethora of reports on all kinds of good things that consuming
green products can do for our health.
And yet, I presume not so many of us would have had dramatic personal experiences of
encountering these humble edible plants as a savior, and a cure from a potentially
deadly diseases. They do our body good with all the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a
garden variety of phytochemicals, but can they really be the miraculous cure for diseases
currently known to be incurable?
I used to be a skeptic, like most of you, but now my answer is "Yes, it could be."
Here goes my saga.
I married my wife in 1987, a healthy, happy woman who was born as the youngest daughter
among 6 brothers and sisters, and grew up in a vibrant, gregarious family. Thanks to her
being the youngest and good-natured child with pleasant personality, she was beloved
by all in her family and in her community.
We had two children, a daughter in 1988, and a son in 1990, and our marriage life
have been happy, and had nothing to be desired. The only problem was that she is a
Hepatitis B
carrier, which we learned while we were visiting doctor's office during her
first pregnancy. I learned that there was no remedy for Hapatitis, especially for
those in chronic stage. She occasionally suffered from the onset of indiscribable
fatigue accompanied by nausia and jaundice-like symptoms that lasted for weeks, and each
time, her blood test showed alarmingly elevated levels of the two enzymes ALT and AST
(alanine amino-transferase and asprtate amino-transferase), indicative of heavy
liver cell damages due to the onset of viral multiplication. She was a mother of two
toddlers and a working woman. Alpha-fetoprotein, an indicator of hepatocellcular
carcinoma, was not found. Literature said almost a third of chronic
carriers would develop liver cirrhosis and even hepatocellular cancer as they get
old, but my personal investigation and gut feelings would tell me that not just a third,
but the great majority of these carriers are doomed, eventually.
My mother-in-law, a dedicated and caring mother, wife, and a Christian with extremely good
personality, who was beloved so much by all, fell vitim to hepatoma (liver cancer) in the
Spring of 1993. She was a hepatitis carrier, too. A mere thought of her gracefulness and
dreadful final days makes my eyes well with tears. She died at the age of 67, and
it broke everyone's heart, and especially my wife's. She was crying for days, in the middl
e of another onset of Hepatitis symptoms.
I brought my wife to Dr. Myron Tong of Huntington Medical Group who was also a faculty
of Univeristy of Southern California School of Medicine and an authority in Hepatitis. He
performed liver biopsy on my wife. She was in pain, physically and emotionally, and my heart
was being torn as she was going though anaesthetization that could further burden her liver.
Despite all the viral attacks she had gone through, fortunately, her liver tissue
had not yet developed signs of cirrhosis. Dr. Tong suggested her to take interferon shots
that was being developed and tested by Amgen, Inc. and Dr. Tong himself. Some serious
side effects could ensue, he warned, such as flu-like symptoms, irregular heart beat,
fever, among others, and the chances of success are just marginal, he added. Although I knew
that interferon was the only available medically option, I was worrying about the
side effects, and was resisting in my mind.
I swore to myself, and before everything whether it exists or not, that I will save her,
no matter what it takes, make her a healthy wife, and live with her for a long time.
I swore that I will never let her fall another victim to this arch-enemy. I started
desperately searching for a solution day after day.
Of course, I knew about vegetables, rich sources of fibers and phytochemicals that do
your body very good, and even lowers your chance of getting various diseases including
diabetes and cancer. My parents-in-law were brought up in the Nothern part of Korean
peninsula, where people eat more meat than vegetables. My wife's family did not favor
vegetables, and I occasionally criticized on their diet.
I found myself standing in front of a juice maker in one afternoon of May 1993. The
saleswoman told me that green juice is helpful for liver diseases, and a host of other
illnesses. I paid $599 to purchase the juice maker (Angel Life), and started preparing
green juice everyday. I tried kale (which looked greenest to me), celery, carrot, parsley,
angelica, cucumber, and some leguminous weeds, and gave her almost a half a gallon of it
a day. My wife was so nice to me, guzzling up copious amount of bitter tasting green juice
without complaining, even though she suffered diarrhea in the first week because
of taking the juice. Well, it could have been a placebo effect or my wishful thinking, but
her condition improved notably within a week: no more fatigue or nausia.
My wife's appointment with Dr. Tong for the scheduled interferon shot was 10 days after I
started giving her green juice. He did blood test for my wife again to check for the viral
activities. Interferons are known to work well only when viruses replicate actively.
Dr. Tong looked at me and my wife in turns, and asked in disbelief "What did you do? The viral
activities disappeared, and (ALT) enzyme level has dropped to normal..". We were so
overjoyed and carried away that we could not answer his question, just saying thank you.
He went "Hmmm, amazing, there have been rare cases in which patients all of a sudden rid
themselves of viruses. It could have been linked to certain abrupt environmental changes.
Well, congratulations. At this point, I cannot give you interferon shots because you have
no viral activities. But, beware, you are still a carrier, so visit me again whenever you
have symptoms.."
My daily ritual of preparing for her the cleanest, highest quality green juice on earth has
never been stopped until today: more honestly, I did it everyday for the first seven and
half years, and for the recent one and half years, I am doing it every other day
out of my laziness ;-), not because I care my wife less. My wife had her blood checked a
couple times during this period when she felt some nausia or fatigue, but each time, there was
no indication of viral activity. For five years, all four of our family including our kids have
been drinking the kale-celery-carrot-apple juice regularly. My kids hated it in the beginning,
so I started feeding them carrot-apple juice first, then shortly after, forced them to
drink green juice. They are excellent green juice drinkers now, and they even thank me.
We rarely suffer from colds, flu, or allergies in recent years.
I am so thankful to my wife for arousing me on health, and all of us are being
benefitted by her contribution.
Thank you for listening.
Arnold Kim, Ph. D.
