All About Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort):

An Introduction

"A mildly tonic, gently detoxifying herb."

What is Mugwort?

Family: Asteraceae
Genus and Species: Artemisia vulgaris
or Artemisia argyi

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a bitter tasting perennial weed with persistent rhizomes oringated from Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Mugwort grows wild in all over the temperature zones, warm or cold, in the world, and commonly found in Central Europe, Southeastern Europe, India, China, Korea, Japan, and Phillippines, etc. The genus name (Artemisia) is from the Greek goddess of hunting (Artemis) because some members of this genus was considered sacred.

Mugwort has been used for food, food additive, and herbal medicine in connection to the digestive system, menstrual complaints, and the treatment of worms for a long time in Asia and Europe, and the oil steam distilled from dried mugwort leaves has been prepared and used for aromatherapy everywhere in the world. All part of the plant are antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive, emmenagogue, purgative, and tonic. Artemisia is used as digestive stimulant, for easing tension through its nervine action, and also as emmenagogue. Mugwort is also slightly tonic for spleen and liver qi, Both leaves or root is used. Main chemical constituents of Artemisia vularis are 1,8-cineole, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), beta-carotene, fiber, calcium, essential oils and fat, quercetin, vulgarin, a sesquiterpene lactone, and zinc. A detailed breakdown of the chemical composition of Artemisia vulgaris can be found in USDA medicinal plant database, Dr. James A. Duke.

-Usage:

Traditionally mugwort was primarily used for food or food additive. Its therapeutic properties are "warming, and hemostatic", and tonic to liver, spleen, and kidney.

Daily dose of 3-9 grams of dry leaves in the form of decoction is recommended. Large dose intake was proven highly effective before the onset of malaria symptoms.
