All About Ligusticum:
An Introduction

What is Ligusticum?
Family: Umbelliferae
Genus and Species: Ligusticum chuanxiang (chuanxiong) or Ligusticum wallichii
Ligusticum chuan xiang is a perennial plant with hermaphrodite flowers that are pollinaetd by insects. Ligusticum has been one of the
most popular herbs in China and Korea, where it has been growing wild and cultivated as a medicinal plant.
Ligusticum root is richly
fragrant and bitter. Family Umbelliferae embraces about 420 genera including genus Ligusticum, which consist of about 60 species
found in Nothern Hemisphere. Ligusticum chuanxiang a.k.a. cnidium contains at least three alkaloids tetramethylpyrazine (TMP),
leucylphenylalanine anhydride, and perlolyrine, and other substances such as ferulic acid, chrysophanol, sedanoic acid,
and 4-hydroxy-3-butyphthalide.
-Therapeutic Actions:
Ligusticum chuanxiang root increases myocardial contractility and slows the heart rate, and improves the coronary circulation and reduces the
oxygen consumption of heart muscle through the action of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP). Ligusticum's other effects are emmenagogue (promoting
menstruation), tonic, analgesic, sedative, and modulatory of blood pressure.
Ligusticum's root has shown anti-bacterial activities.
-Usage:
For anemia, menstrual disorders, headaches and muscle pains.
Dose: Daily intake of decoctions from 3-6 grams or up to 9 grams of dried root is suggested.
Side Effects: None reported. Ligusticum is known to be a safe harb.
