Elimite Evaluation of the control of Myobia musculi infestations on laboratory mice with permethrin.

The efficacy of permethrin against Myobia musculi (Schrank) (Acari:Myobiidae) infestations on mice was evaluated using four different dose delivery methods. In all methods, an attempt was made to deliver 0.5 mg of active permethrin weekly to each mouse. Successful control was achieved with topical or environmental treatment with 0.25% permethrin dust and by dipping the mice into a 0.6 g/l permethrin emulsion. The use of an emulsion applied to the bedding produced the least satisfactory control. Untreated mice had an average infestation rate of 57.3% throughout the study. No significant differences were seen between treated and untreated groups in either body weight or histopathology of the liver, lung, or kidney.

Elimite Permethrin and its two metabolite residues in seven agricultural crops.

Metabolite residues of permethrin are not reported in the literature for most agricultural crops. This paper reports residues of permethrin and its 2 metabolites (dichlorovinyl acid and metaphenoxybenzyl alcohol) in 7 different agricultural crops (Chinese cabbage, spinach, asparagus, raspberries, green peas, turnip roots, and turnip greens). Permethrin residues declined approximately 85% within 7 days after treatment in all crops. In most cases, the acid metabolite residues peaked at 3 days, and declined after that. Translocation of residues into turnip roots was very slight; the average was less than 0.05 ppm for permethrin and alcohol metabolite residues and none was detected for the acid metabolite residue. Permethrin residues in the turnip greens averaged approximately 2 ppm for the 0.112 kg ai/ha treatment, and 6 ppm for the 0.224 kg ai/ha treatment.

Elimite Distribution and depletion of radioactivity in hens treated dermally with 14C-labeled permethrin.

The 25/75 cis-trans mixture of permethrin (BW21Z), one of the new broad-spectrum pyrethroid insecticides, was labeled with 14C in the alcohol methylene carbon moiety and mist sprayed at two rates (3.77 or 11.94 mg/hen) on 28 hens. Peak permethrin equivalents in both treatment groups were found in the skins, .414 and l.69 ppm, respectively. Total permethrin equivalents peaked 3 days after treatment, but permethrin equivalents in eggs peaked 5 days after treatment.

Elimite Susceptibility of adult field strains of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in Singapore to pirimiphos-methyl and permethrin.

The susceptibilities of field strains (Fl) of Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus adult females to pirimiphos-methyl and permethrin were investigated and compared with a susceptible laboratory strain (S) by using a filter paper (12 x 15 cm) impregnation method. The resistance ratio between the 50% lethal concentration values (RR50) of the Fl and the S strains shows that the RR50 of Fl Ae. aegypti for pirimiphos-methyl was 1.5 and the RR50 of Fl Ae. aegypti for permethrin was 12.9. The RR50 of Fl Ae. albopictus for pirimiphos-methyl was 1.4, and that for permethrin was 1.8. This indicates that the field strain Ae. aegypti, but not Ae. albopictus, has developed resistance to permethrin. However, both species are still susceptible to pirimiphos-methyl. Therefore, control with pirimiphos-methyl will still be effective.

Elimite The potential of some synthetic pyrethroids for control of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus).

As part of a continuing programme to aid in the development of new acaricides, the potentials of three synthetic pyrethroids, permethrin, cypermethrin and decamethrin, were assessed against a range of resistant strains of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus). The compounds were shown to be acaricidal, with decamethrin the most effective, giving efficient control of susceptible and organo-phosphorus resistant strains of the cattle tick at concentrations as low as one fifth of those previously used for any commercial acaricide. However higher concentrations were required for satisfactory control of the DDT-resistant strain. Permethrin-selection of a field strain containing a low percentage of DDT-resistant ticks led to rapid development of resistance to a level equivalent to that of the DDT-resistant strain. Further selection increased resistance to permethrin to a higher level than that shown in the DDT-resistant strain. This increased resistance to permethrin appears to be restricted mainly to this compound and is not associated with a marked increase in resistance to cypermethrin, decamethrin or DDT. The potential of organo-phosphorus compounds to potentiate the pyrethroids when the two classes of compounds are used as mixtures against the pyrethroid-resistant and susceptible strains was confirmed.
